What Is Solana (SOL)?

Solana and SOL

Solana is a public blockchain designed to process thousands of transactions a second for a fraction of a rupee each. That speed has made it a home for trading apps, payments, NFTs and memecoins. SOL is the network's native token: it pays transaction fees and is staked to choose and reward the validators who run the chain.

Who created Solana?

Anatoly Yakovenko, a former Qualcomm engineer, described Solana's core idea in a 2017 white paper and co-founded Solana Labs. The mainnet beta launched in March 2020. The Solana Foundation in Switzerland supports the ecosystem, and several independent teams now build validator software for it.

How it works

How Does Solana Work?

Throughput and proof of history

Solana orders transactions with proof of history, a running cryptographic clock, so validators do not have to spend time agreeing on order before executing. Combined with parallel execution of transactions that do not touch the same accounts, that lets one chain handle far more activity than most, without rollups.

Validators and staking

Validators stake SOL, their own and delegated by holders, to take part in consensus. Rewards are paid in SOL, and delegators share them minus the validator's commission. Running a validator needs powerful hardware, which keeps their number lower than on some other chains.

Network fees

Each transaction pays a small base fee per signature, and users can add a priority fee to get ahead in busy moments. Fees stay low because the network can fit so many transactions per block, but they rise when popular launches or trading frenzies crowd it.

Price drivers and risks

What Affects the Solana Price?

What moves the price

SOL's price follows demand to use the network — trading volume, new applications, memecoin waves — and how much SOL is staked and off the market, as well as the broad crypto cycle. Because much of its activity is speculative trading, it tends to swing harder than Bitcoin or Ethereum in both directions.

Risks specific to Solana

Solana suffered several outages in 2021 and 2022 that halted the chain for hours, and validator hardware requirements concentrate who can run one. Much of its activity is driven by short-lived trading trends, and a large share of SOL was held by early investors and the foundation.

On Gravitas

How to Explore Solana on Gravitas

Gravitas does not sell or hold SOL. It lets you trade options on Solana from your own exchange account — from a guided up-or-down trade to strikes you pick — with the most you can lose shown before you place it.

Gravitas connects to your exchange account through the exchange's own sign-in and never holds your funds. Trades settle in USDT on that account. Options can expire worthless; the most you can lose is shown before every trade.

FAQs

Solana Frequently Asked Questions

What is Solana and what is SOL used for?

Solana is a fast, low-cost blockchain for apps, payments and trading. SOL is its token: it pays every transaction fee and is staked with validators to secure the network, earning staking rewards for those who delegate.

Why does Solana price change?

SOL moves with demand for the Solana network — trading, new apps and memecoin activity — with how much of the supply is staked, and with the wider crypto market. Its heavy share of speculative activity makes it more volatile than Bitcoin.

What affects Solana transaction fees?

Each transaction pays a small base fee per signature plus an optional priority fee. Fees climb when many people compete for block space, such as during a popular token launch, and fall when the network is quiet.

Can I view SOL price in rupees?

Yes. This page shows SOL in rupees by default, converted from Bybit's SOL/USDT price at Tether's dollar price and the ECB's USD/INR reference rate. Use the INR, USD and USDT switch at the top, or the SOL to INR converter for amounts.

Where does the Solana price on this page come from?

From Bybit's SOL/USDT spot market, the last traded price, streamed live in your browser, with rupee and dollar figures converted at the rates named under the price.

Can I trade Solana on Gravitas?

Gravitas does not sell SOL. It lets you trade options on SOL from your own connected exchange account, with the payoff and the most you can lose shown before you trade.
