What Is Bitcoin (BTC)?

Bitcoin in one paragraph

Bitcoin (BTC) is a digital currency that runs on a public network with no company, bank or government in charge. Anyone can send bitcoin to anyone else, and every transfer is recorded on the blockchain, a ledger that thousands of independent computers keep identical copies of. It is the oldest cryptocurrency and the largest by market value, and most other coins are priced against it.

Who created Bitcoin?

Bitcoin was described in a nine-page paper published on 31 October 2008 under the name Satoshi Nakamoto, a name no one has been able to tie to a person or group. The network produced its first block on 3 January 2009. Nakamoto stepped away in 2010; since then an open community of developers has maintained the software, with changes proposed and debated in public as Bitcoin Improvement Proposals.

How it works

How Does Bitcoin Work?

Proof of work and miners

Transactions are bundled into blocks about every ten minutes by miners, machines that compete to solve a computational puzzle. The winner adds the next block and earns newly issued bitcoin plus the fees in it. Rewriting past blocks would mean redoing all the work stacked on top of them, which is what makes the ledger costly to tamper with.

The 21 million cap and the halving

The block reward halves every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years; the most recent halving was in April 2024. Issuance therefore slows on a fixed schedule and stops altogether near 21 million BTC. No one can change that schedule without most of the network agreeing to run different software.

Self-custody

Bitcoin can be held on an exchange, which keeps the keys for you, or in a wallet whose private keys only you control. Self-custody removes the exchange as a point of failure but puts recovery entirely on you: a lost seed phrase cannot be reset by anyone.

Price drivers and risks

What Affects the Bitcoin Price?

What moves the price

Bitcoin has no earnings or coupon, so its price is set entirely by supply and demand across exchanges worldwide. Demand follows interest rates and the appetite for risk, flows into and out of spot Bitcoin ETFs and other funds, regulation, and sentiment. Because new supply is fixed, swings in demand show up quickly in the price.

Risks specific to Bitcoin

Bitcoin has fallen more than 70% from a peak more than once. Exchanges can fail or freeze withdrawals, lost keys mean lost coins, and rules in India and elsewhere can change. Mining is concentrated in a few large pools, and the network's long-term security budget depends on fees as the block reward shrinks.

On Gravitas

How to Explore Bitcoin on Gravitas

Gravitas does not buy or hold bitcoin for you. It is a way to trade options on BTC, placed on your own exchange account, with the payoff and the most you can lose shown before anything is sent. Pick the way that fits how much you want to decide yourself.

Gravitas connects to your exchange account through the exchange's own sign-in and never holds your funds. Trades settle in USDT on that account. Options can expire worthless; the most you can lose is shown before every trade.

FAQs

Bitcoin Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bitcoin and how does it work?

Bitcoin is a digital currency on a public, permissionless network. Miners bundle transactions into blocks roughly every ten minutes and secure them with proof of work, and the protocol caps the supply at 21 million BTC. No company or government runs it; the rules are enforced by the software that thousands of independent computers run.

How much is 1 BTC in INR today?

At the last read (16 Oct 2026, 16:55 IST), 1 BTC was worth about ₹7,871,578; the live figure is at the top of this page. It is Bybit's last BTC/USDT price, converted to dollars at Tether's price and to rupees at the European Central Bank's USD/INR reference rate. An Indian exchange's own rupee price can sit a little higher or lower.

Why does the Bitcoin price change?

Because the supply is fixed, the price moves with demand alone: buying and selling across exchanges, fund and ETF flows, interest rates and the appetite for risk, regulation, and news. Leverage adds to it, since a sharp move forces leveraged positions to close and pushes the price further the same way.

What is Bitcoin halving?

Every 210,000 blocks, about every four years, the number of new bitcoin paid to miners per block is cut in half. It slows the growth of supply on a schedule set in 2009; the most recent halving was in April 2024. Past halvings have not moved the price in any guaranteed way.

Is Bitcoin legal in India?

Buying, holding and selling crypto is not banned in India, but crypto is not legal tender. Gains are taxed as virtual digital assets at a flat 30%, with 1% TDS on transfers above the threshold, and exchanges serving India must register with the Financial Intelligence Unit. Rules change; this is not legal or tax advice.

Where does the Bitcoin price on this page come from?

From Bybit's BTC/USDT spot market, the last traded price, read when the page is built and then streamed live in your browser. The rupee and dollar figures are converted from USDT at the rates named under the price, each with its date or time.

Can I trade Bitcoin on Gravitas?

Gravitas does not sell bitcoin. It lets you trade options on BTC — contracts that pay depending on where the price is at a chosen deadline — placed on your own connected exchange account, with the most you can lose shown before you trade.
