What Is Tether Gold (XAUT)?
What XAUT is
Tether Gold (XAUT) is a token on public blockchains that represents ownership of physical gold. According to its issuer, each token corresponds to one troy fine ounce of gold on a London Good Delivery bar. It lets gold be held, moved and traded like a crypto asset, at any hour, in fractions of an ounce.
Who issues it?
XAUT was launched in January 2020 by TG Commodities, part of the Tether group that issues the USDT stablecoin. Tether publishes a lookup of the bars it says back the tokens, identified by serial number.
How it works
How Does XAUT Gold Backing Work?
Custody and backing
Tether states that the gold is held in a vault in Switzerland, allocated to the tokens in circulation. The token is only as good as that custody: holders rely on Tether's statements and attestations, not on gold in their own possession.
Redemption
Tether's terms allow holders to redeem for physical gold delivered to an address in Switzerland, or to sell the tokens. Redemption involves verification and fees and is aimed at holders of whole bars, so most holders exit by selling on an exchange.
How the price tracks gold
Because each token can in principle be redeemed for its ounce, traders keep XAUT's price close to the spot price of gold: when it drifts, buying or selling against redemption brings it back. On exchanges it can still trade at a small premium or discount, especially when gold markets are closed and XAUT is not.
Price drivers and risks
How Does XAUT Differ From Physical Gold?
Owning XAUT versus physical gold
A gold coin or bar in your hands needs no issuer to stay gold. XAUT does: it adds the risk that the issuer, the custodian or the token's smart contract fails, in exchange for instant transfer, small sizes and round-the-clock trading. In India, physical gold, gold ETFs and sovereign gold bonds are taxed and regulated differently from a crypto token.
Risks specific to XAUT
The main risks are issuer and custody risk, redemption limits, and premiums or discounts to gold on thinner markets. The price is also exposed to the dollar: gold is priced in USD, so a rupee figure moves with USD/INR as well as with gold.
On Gravitas
How to Explore Tether Gold on Gravitas
Gravitas does not sell gold or XAUT tokens. XAUT is the gold market on Gravitas: you can trade options on it from your own exchange account, sized to a view on gold, with the payoff and the most you can lose shown first.
Gravitas connects to your exchange account through the exchange's own sign-in and never holds your funds. Trades settle in USDT on that account. Options can expire worthless; the most you can lose is shown before every trade.

A token issued by the Tether group that, according to Tether, is backed by one troy fine ounce of physical gold per token, held in a Swiss vault. It trades on crypto exchanges around the clock and can be held in fractions.
Is XAUT the same as owning physical gold?
No. Owning physical gold needs no third party; owning XAUT means relying on Tether and its custodian to hold the gold and honour redemptions. XAUT trades more easily, but it carries issuer and custody risk that bullion does not.
How does XAUT track gold?
Each token is redeemable, under Tether's terms, for the gold it represents, so traders keep its price close to the gold spot price. It can drift from gold by a small premium or discount, especially when gold markets are closed.
What are XAUT custody and issuer risks?
The gold is held by a custodian chosen by Tether, so you depend on both being solvent and honest. Redemption has conditions and fees, and attestations about the reserves are produced for the issuer rather than by an independent regulator in India.
Where does the Tether Gold price on this page come from?
From Bybit's XAUT/USDT spot market, the last traded price, streamed live in your browser, with rupee and dollar figures converted at the rates named under the price. It is not an MCX, bank or jeweller's gold rate.
Can I trade Tether Gold on Gravitas?
Gravitas does not sell XAUT or gold. It lets you trade options whose underlying is XAUT, from your own connected exchange account, with the most you can lose shown before you trade.
