What Is Ethereum (ETH)?

Ethereum and ether

Ethereum is a public blockchain that runs programs as well as payments. Those programs, called smart contracts, are the building blocks of stablecoins, lending markets, token exchanges and NFTs. Ether (ETH) is the network's own currency: every transaction and every contract call is paid for in it, which is why it is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market value.

Who created Ethereum?

Vitalik Buterin proposed Ethereum in late 2013 and built it with co-founders including Gavin Wood and Joseph Lubin. The network went live on 30 July 2015 after a public crowdsale. Development is coordinated by the Ethereum Foundation and many independent teams, with upgrades agreed through Ethereum Improvement Proposals.

How it works

How Does Ethereum Work?

Proof of stake and staking

Since the Merge on 15 September 2022, Ethereum has been secured by proof of stake. Validators lock up 32 ETH each as collateral to propose and attest to blocks, earn rewards for doing so, and lose part of their stake if they break the rules. Holders with less ETH can stake through pools or exchanges, taking on that provider's risk.

Gas fees and the burn

Every action on Ethereum costs gas, priced in fractions of ETH. Since August 2021 each transaction's base fee is burned rather than paid out, so when the network is busy more ETH can be destroyed than issued. Fees rise when blocks are full and fall when demand is quiet.

Layer 2 networks

Most everyday Ethereum activity now happens on layer 2 rollups such as Arbitrum, Optimism and Base, which batch many transactions and settle them on Ethereum. They make transactions cheaper while still paying Ethereum for security, and most of them also use ETH for fees.

Price drivers and risks

What Affects the Ethereum Price?

What moves the price

ETH's price follows demand for block space and for ETH as collateral and as a staked, yield-bearing asset, alongside the same forces that move all crypto: interest rates, risk appetite, ETF flows and regulation. Network upgrades and how much activity moves to layer 2s also shape how much ETH is burned.

Risks specific to Ethereum

Smart contracts can contain bugs that are exploited, and staking providers concentrate a large share of the stake. Fees can spike in busy markets. Like any crypto asset, ETH has had drawdowns of more than 70% in the past, and regulators treat staking services differently from country to country.

On Gravitas

How to Explore Ethereum on Gravitas

Gravitas does not sell or hold ether. It is a way to trade options on ETH from your own exchange account, built from a view as simple as up or down, with the payoff and the most you can lose shown first.

Gravitas connects to your exchange account through the exchange's own sign-in and never holds your funds. Trades settle in USDT on that account. Options can expire worthless; the most you can lose is shown before every trade.

FAQs

Ethereum Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ethereum and what is ETH used for?

Ethereum is a blockchain for running smart contracts: programs that hold and move funds by fixed rules. ETH is its currency. It pays gas fees for every transaction, is staked by validators to secure the network, and is widely used as collateral in on-chain lending and trading.

How does Ethereum staking work?

Validators lock 32 ETH each and run software that proposes and checks blocks. They are paid in newly issued ETH and fees, and part of the stake can be cut (slashed) for misbehaving. With less ETH you can stake through a pool or an exchange, which then holds the keys and takes a cut.

Why do ETH prices change?

ETH moves with demand for the network — how much people pay to use it, and how much is locked in staking and lending — and with the wider crypto market: interest rates, risk appetite, fund flows and regulation. A busy network burns more ETH in fees, which changes supply.

What is the difference between Ethereum and Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is built to be money with a fixed supply, secured by proof-of-work mining. Ethereum is built to run programs, is secured by proof of stake, and has no fixed cap: its supply changes with issuance to validators and the fee burn. Both trade around the clock and are volatile.

Where does the Ethereum price on this page come from?

From Bybit's ETH/USDT spot market, the last traded price, streamed live in your browser. Rupee and dollar figures are converted from USDT at the rates named under the price, with their times.

Can I trade Ethereum on Gravitas?

Gravitas does not sell ether. It lets you trade options on ETH, placed on your own connected exchange account, with the payoff and the most you can lose shown before you trade.
